Surrendering your Pet

Please understand that, the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia cannot accept every animal brought to our shelter immediately. We respect the difficult decision of owners to relinquish their pets, but will not euthanize to control the number of pets at our facility. Therefore, we will accept the surrender of owned pets as space allows.
  • Animals are surrendered to our Facility Monday through Friday, 11A.M. to 4P.M.
  • For more information about our admissions process, please click here.
  • Stray animal are required by law to go to your local Animal Control facility so that their owners may claim them.
Surrendering hours are Monday through Friday between 11A.M. to 4P.M. Please plan on spending at least 30 minutes at the shelter and allow additional time if bringing multiple animals. Admission of any animal into the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia is based on the animal’s health, behavior, and adoptability. We make no guarantee of being able to accept any animal. When you bring your pets, please have:
  • Any veterinary records
  • Your pet’s medications
  • Special food or treats that your pet needs
  • Your pet’s bed, toys, leash and other belongings from home

Why does the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia ask for a Donation when surrendering an animal?

When we admit a pet to our shelter, we are committed to providing for his or her care until adoption, regardless of the length of his stay with us. The veterinary treatment and routine daily care we provide your pet will be costly. A donation helps ease the shelters costs under our continued care while awaiting a forever home. When you arrive: • We will test your cat for feline AIDS and leukemia, or we will test your dog over 4 months of age for heartworms. • A staff member will evaluate the temperament of your pet. • Once your pet has been screened, and the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia decides to accept your pet, we ask a donation to our shelter to be made. This is not required, but will greatly help us care for your pet.

Information for Stray Animals

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia does not admit strays directly into its care for two reasons. First, owners who have lost a pet need a central location to find him, and that is their local municipal shelter. Second, as a private agency, we must use our shelter space to save the largest number of lives possible, and strays must be held for a period of time during which they cannot be adopted. When a stray is brought to the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, the good Samaritans who found the animal are directed to the appropriate animal control facility. Thus, if an owner is searching for the pet, he has adequate time under the “stray period” (a mandatory period of time that the pet must be held under state law) to find him at the government shelter. When the pet’s stray period has ended, we then can transfer the pet to our shelter through our transfer agreements with the government shelters. This policy exists to give stray pets the best chance of being reunited with their families. If you have found a stray animal, please contact your local Animal Control Agency.
